English. Hỏa Lò preserves part of the prison built by the French from 1896 under the name Maison Centrale. Its Vietnamese name comes from a village and street associated with earthenware and stove production. The prison held political detainees and later American airmen, who called it the Hanoi Hilton. Much of the complex was demolished in the 1990s, while the preserved section became a historic site. It connects Hanoi’s urban history with imprisonment and wartime memory.
